He Said It

So you want to be writer?
Charles Bukowski

if it doesn't come bursting out of you

in spite of everything,
don't do it.
unless it comes unasked out of your
heart and your mind and your mouth
and your gut,
don't do it.
if you have to sit for hours
staring at your computer screen
or hunched over your
typewriter
searching for words,
don't do it.
if you're doing it for money or
fame,
don't do it.
if you're doing it because you want
women in your bed,
don't do it.
if you have to sit there and
rewrite it again and again,
don't do it.
if it's hard work just thinking about doing it,
don't do it.
if you're trying to write like somebody
else,
forget about it.

if you have to wait for it to roar out of
you,
then wait patiently.
if it never does roar out of you,
do something else.

if you first have to read it to your wife
or your girlfriend or your boyfriend
or your parents or to anybody at all,
you're not ready.

don't be like so many writers,
don't be like so many thousands of
people who call themselves writers,
don't be dull and boring and
pretentious, don't be consumed with self-
love.
the libraries of the world have
yawned themselves to
sleep
over your kind.
don't add to that.
don't do it.
unless it comes out of
your soul like a rocket,
unless being still would
drive you to madness or
suicide or murder,
don't do it.
unless the sun inside you is
burning your gut,
don't do it.

when it is truly time,
and if you have been chosen,
it will do it by
itself and it will keep on doing it
until you die or it dies in you.

there is no other way.

and there never was.

damn.

I don't care what anyone says, Chloë Sevigny looks damn hot in this outfit. And only she could take a straight-from-the-runway outfit and make it look so effortless and throw-on. The girl's got gumption.

Christy et Jean

I think it's relatively obvious that Jean Seberg, immortalized in her little striped shirt in A bout de souffle (Breathless), is considered one of those 'classic' style icons. And then there is Christy Turlington, super amongst Supers. Put the two together, throw Ellen von Unwerth behind the lens, and you have this wonderful Turlington as Seberg editorial from a 1990 US Vogue. Pretty fucking fabulous.

we weren't there

Just came back from seeing Taking Woodstock. Made me want to trove for pictures of a time gone by. And now it's time for bed. Peace.

Lauren Hutton-esque

EDIT: here's an attempt to repost a post that I tried to post a couple of days ago. Hopefully it works or I may go postal. heh.

I picked up the latest French Vogue to browse while at Borders. This issue didn't really strike me as particularly interesting, but I did enjoy this little accessories editorial inspired by Lauren Hutton's 70s style. While I didn't pay much attention to the actual accessories in the story, I do quite enjoy the recreation of Lauren Hutton-esque outfits. I'm not one for safari fashion myself, but the latter three looks with high waisted pants/shorts and oxford shirts are very appealing for a simple spring/summer look. And the little snapshots of Lauren are just perfect.

Chloe Sevigny x Opening Ceremony Part Deux

Second round of collaborations between Chloe Sevigny and Opening Ceremony have resulted in this Fall unisex collection. Menswear, but with scaled down sizing for women apparently. Of course, my favorite thing about Chloe's collab, is Chloe herself. Amazingly as always.

dunst&rodarte

I don't know what it is that makes me like Kirsten Dunst's style so much ... I think it's because it all seems so effortless. It's all very "I'm going to the Rodarte show so why don't I just, uh, I dunno, throw on this Rodarte dress and this coat and bounce..." I guess what I mean is, she can take this somewhat fantastical dress and wear it with such effortless flair, no excessive accessorizing or styling, so that it looks casual, somehow simple and unfussy - in a good way. I don't know if that clarified it any further, but there you go...

Well, la-di-da, la-di-da

While waiting in a salon yesterday, I ended up browsing through "1970s (Images of the 20th Century - Getty Images)" where there was a great candid photo of Diane Keaton (I couldn't find it online). It reminded me of how much I adore 1970s Diane Keaton. Annie Hall is one OF my favorite movies, and Annie's wardrobe, an eccentric mix of masculine and feminine, is now somewhat iconic. The clothes were actually Keaton's own, and are just one representation of her inspiring style. Here are a sampling of some pictures of her in the '70s and early '80s. She's got that kooky, androgynous look down and I love her to bits.

And I'll leave you with the last lines of Annie Hall:
Alvy Singer: [narrating] After that it got pretty late, and we both had to go, but it was great seeing Annie again. I... I realized what a terrific person she was, and... and how much fun it was just knowing her; and I... I, I thought of that old joke, y'know, the, this... this guy goes to a psychiatrist and says, "Doc, uh, my brother's crazy; he thinks he's a chicken." And, uh, the doctor says, "Well, why don't you turn him in?" The guy says, "I would, but I need the eggs." Well, I guess that's pretty much now how I feel about relationships; y'know, they're totally irrational, and crazy, and absurd, and... but, uh, I guess we keep goin' through it because, uh, most of us... need the eggs.

Oh, Clémence

Clémence Poésy. I love the way she layers and adds different textures to her somewhat monochromatic outfits. (Obviously the magazine shots are less representative of her style, but I just thought they were pretty). While some may label it effortless, I find it more inspiring that it seems that she does put an effort into the way she looks and clearly thinks of the way things go together--it is more intriguing, me thinks.

What's with the desire for the 'effortlessness' look, by the by? It's seems that sometimes people are ashamed/embarrassed to admit the degree of thought put into an outfit, especially because fashion is considered superficial, and therefore not worthy of too much thought. In the grand scheme of things it really isn't and there are definitely more important things in life, but at the very least I can control my appearance (for the most part, sometimes the bangs refuse to cooperate)... so might as well make an effort and have a little fun with it, eh?

Anyway, apparently, Clémence is la "Garçonne we love" this month, so there you go.

Pretty Little Things: Ellen Von Unwerth & Erin Fetherston

First, Ellen Von Unwerth collaborated with Erin Fetherston to create, Wendybird, a short fashion film with Kirsten Dunst as a factory worker who happens upon a trunk of clothing and finds escape from monotony, if only for a brief moment. Now, in a new collaboration, Zooey Deschanel stars in this trippy and dreamy short that includes fairies, a prince charming of sorts and more of Fetherston's feminine frocks. Fantastical and marvelous. I love them both to bits.
