Woman Examining Man

Woman Examining Man by Helmut Newton is one of my favorite photographs. The shadows, his back, her legs splayed, the overt sexuality, the role reversal, her gaze objectifying the man in a way that she is normally objectified. It's a picture to be analyzed for hours.

I finally saw it in person, displayed at Tate Modern's Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera exhibition, which is quite an interesting show. For those in London, it is on until October 3rd.

Dirt

Some wall art that requires a little purchaser participation before it can be fully realized...bit genius, I think.

the wild unknown

I quite like buying gifts for Christmas. I think part of the reason for that, apart from the simple joy of (hopefully) making others joyous, is I do most of my shopping online. That way I avoid the scary shoppers and can find so many interesting little things by just stumbling upon them. That is how I came across these calendars and prisms from The Wild Unknown. Each object is handcrafted in Brooklyn, but inspired by the Catskills and Great Lakes, where the glass is blown for the prisms. That's the other thing about buying online, I can support the artisans and small businesses, and that's kinda nice too.

Now I just have to find someone to gift them to, otherwise, they may end up in my own home. And that's not what Christmas is about...er, is it?

Maurizio Cattelan

Maurizio Cattelan, an Italian artist, whose speciality is large scale installations with a sense of humour, collaborated this month on a W editorial with Linda Evangelista. Personally, my favorite images aren't the fashion-related ones but the other sets that he created, especially the United States of Meat (my title, not his). He makes you think, I think.

He has a piece showing at the current Tate Modern Pop Art exhibit, which I now will definitely be seeing.

play

I just dropped by to say, that if you must be on the internet rather than outside squeezing every last bit out of summer, then I suggest spending some time at a self-declared 'website for play' - thisissand.com - it's a digital sandbox (and art project that began in 2008), where anything is possible.

Some pretty awesome things can result from a little play in the sand:

someone's photography

Ah shit, it's been awhile, eh? Last week I worked 2-10 everyday, and any time not at work was spent enjoying the sun, not the internet. But more importantly, as I've said before, I feel like a bit of a wash posting just for the sake of posting...and so I remain silent. Anyway, today I happily stumbled upon the fashion photography of Olivia Frølich and thought I would share. It's hazy, lo-fi and lovely; therefore, a trifecta of wonderful.

Passing Afternoon

On this grey and gloomy afternoon, may I present the sublimely dark photography of Chadwick Tyler to serve as a distraction from all responsibilities, if only for a short while...

Prints

I love etsy. Normally I use it to find vintage clothing, but recently I have been scouring people's pages looking at all the amazing prints that are available. There are so many talented artists out there, and it's nice that they have a platform to show and sell their work that is so accessible. I'm thinking I need some more wall-hangings for my apartment, and these are the prints/artists currently on my mind (in no particular order):
