goodbye home

I found this shirt the day before I left London, and bought it on a whim solely because of the colour - it's kind of like that Rachel Comey tank that I was coveting (though mine photographs less yellow and more green than it actually is) plus it's slightly oversized so drapes wonderfully. The perfect comfy tee for a 7 hour flight. As for this hat...I bought it when I lived on Chappaquiddick (Martha's Vineyard) the summer after my senior year of college (2007). It was quite pricey, a real Panama hat made in Panama, but worth it because once I bought it, I didn't take it off the rest of the summer. When I got back from the island, I was moving to London, so left it home in my closet, where it has been sadly waiting, losing its shape, to be worn again. I think I'll be taking it back with me though my suitcase is already stuffed to the brim.
Today is one of those days where you wish time would stand still. The weather is perfect, and being home amongst the woods and the quiet, everything feels so serene. I can walk around outside barefoot and fancy-free. So while I should be packing, I prefer to sit on our porch swing and just listen to the quiet surroundings that I will soon be leaving. Goodbye home, I shall miss you.

[Sidenote: Within the next few days I'll be flying back to London, then taking the train to Marseilles and won't be back until June 9th, so the blog will be lying dormant until then. À bientôt!]

10 Again

So, in the last week that I've been home I have been taken for a 16 year old about, oh, 7 or 8 times. Which is quite usual, seven years off, but usual. Indeed, it's not as bad as the time when I went to Chili's with my family, and at the time my younger sister was 9 and I was 20, (note the 11 year difference, accidents happen, lalala), and the waitress asked if we would like two children menus...as in children menus that are intended for 12 and under. Uh, no thanks.

Anyway, today was another dreary wet day in Mass (must the rain follow me?), so there wasn't much else to do other than indulge in childish activities. For me that meant gorging on donuts and coffee while making friendship bracelets...er, but selfishly not for friends, but for myself. Or maybe not so selfish since I haven't done such a thing since I was a wee lass and there was a lot of cursing, mistakes and deknotting involved...many hours, a dozen powdered donuts and many Law and Order episodes later...I completed two whole bracelets, one thin and one not-so-thin. Woo hoo. They will now be permanently afixed to my wrist as proud badges of honor...though I suppose this will only encourage rather than dissuade the age-guessing. Alas, alack, I guess my inner child shall have to shine through a little longer.

Ps. See the ring on my middle finger? Got that in Maine at a Native American Jewelry Store. I loved the design so much and got it despite the fact that it is of Kokopelli, whom I was told, is a god of fertility and music. I choose to focus on the latter.

all the right places

It doesn't take much to make me happy...and this outfit proves it. While simple -- a skirt and blouse -- the details such as the print on the blouse, the sleeves, the precise curve-hugging of the skirt and the fishnet-dotted tights all make it so much more enviable and admirable in my mind. To me, this is perfect spring/summer transition dressing. I couldn't care less about all that the Miami Vice-90s-neon-pastels look that seems to be floating around this summer. Give me this girl's outfit over that, any day. I can only hope to one day be able to pull off such detailed, tailored, sophisticated simplicity with her panache. Though I suppose I would have to minus the sophistication and throw in a bit of scruffy hair to make it truly me...ah well.

State of Maine

My weekend in Maine was a tad chilly and cloudy with a little bit of rain but still a jolly ol' time. While whale watching, kayaking and sailing were all on the 'to-do' list, my ever disorganized family didn't get around to any of it and spent most of the time exploring the Acadia National Park, eating tons of blueberry-filled foods and enjoying the sea air. The salty smell of the ocean is perhaps one of my favorite smells in the whole wide world. Although the water was too cold to go in to, and the sun refused to shine, it was still a lovely family getaway, with only a little bit of bickering, lots of seafood and gorgeous surroundings.

yikes...

...has it really been 10 days since I last posted? Well, during my internet absence I finished my last two exams thus finishing my second year of law school whilst gorging on red velvet cake to get me through, cleaned my apartment, went to see Oliver! the musical as a belated gift, then hopped on a plane to Massachusetts, where I am currently lolling about in the shade trying to stay cool. 94 degree weather, cloudless skies, scorching sun, how I have missed you...mosquitos not so much.

Anyway, yesterday, while searching for maple syrup that was not in the kitchen pantry, I went into the basement where we have an extra pantry for all that good stuff that never expires, and while I did not find any maple syrup and so was left with very depressing Eggos (which I have to eat while home since London appears to be frozen waffle-less), I did find some clothes in the pantry (why, I don't know, my mother is slightly insane)...including something that's been on my spring wish list for forever, a chambray shirt.

I've been on the hunt for a good'un for a while with no avail, and normally I don't turn to my mother for clothing since she is the exact opposite of a pack-rat, but there amongst the ramen noodles and pasta sauces was my perfect shirt with just the right amount of fading to be that perfect chambray colour. With a little bit of begging, (and pointing out that it has a bleach stain, a no-no for her, more charm for me) it is now mine! As is this polka-dot number, that was also hidden in the pantry. So it just goes to show my two favorite things in this very big world, food and clothing, should always mix.

I am off to Maine for the long weekend, so I'm afraid the rate of posting won't be improving much but hopefully I'll have pretty pictures to share when I return. The weather reports right now seems to be confused between sunny and rainy, so please please, for the love of god, pray for sun everyone!

"i'm twenty-three now but will i live to see twenty-four, the way things is going, i dunno"

This is what 23 looks like:

Yesterday was my birthday. The big 2-3. I spent it studying, woot. So it wasn't a very exciting day, but I did get surprised with the best cake ever:

Red Velvet!!! I died a little bit inside with every bite. And that's a good thing.

And now back to studying. Boo.

wipe that face off your head, bitch

I don't really know much about Wildfox Couture but have seen it pop up on a couple blogs with girls with red lips bouncing on beds in their underwear and witty graphic tees. Not really my thing, until I saw their look book for spring 2009. Gotta give props to a look book styled entirely on an amazing scene of one of my favorite movies...

I've always wanted to make my own version of the Seniors sweatshirt (I was officially a high school senior, in oh, er, 2002-3), and now that someone has done it for me, albeit in shirt form, I don't have to. Though I don't know how I feel about the croppedness of it. I don't think crop tops are for me, but since I am short, maybe it'll just look like a normal top? I think I shall search around for it online and find out. I need something to get me out this exam funk.

Passing Afternoon

On this grey and gloomy afternoon, may I present the sublimely dark photography of Chadwick Tyler to serve as a distraction from all responsibilities, if only for a short while...

Death in a pretty dress

So I ventured outside today for a change of scenery. Of course, change of scenery requires change of clothes. And though my life currently consists of wearing a rotating wardrobe of pajama pants and is horribly consumed by reading, when going outside I choose to be horribly consumed by reading in a pretty dress. Ignore the glasses.

It's okay, I'll be alright....just four more finals to go, and then homeward bound to Massachusetts for a couple weeks, followed by a jaunt to the south of France at the beginning of June. Just 12 more days. 12, 12, 12. Shoot me, please.

10 favorites...ok, 11 favorites

After finishing my exam yesterday, all I wanted to do was lie down and watch some of my favorite movies. But, unfortunately, I had to get straight back to work, preppin' for the next one, but at least I got to sit in Regent's Park and study in the SUN! Anyway, back to my favorite films...I am absolutely god-awful dreadful at picking favorites. I don't know if it is because I like too many movies, there are so many that resonant with me or what, but my list is never-ending so it feels a bit odd to call them all my favorites. But they are, and who ever said you couldn't have a multitude of loves? Movies and me, are a match made in heaven.

So, like bloggers here and there, I present to you clips of 11 of my favorite films, from childhood and now. This is but a mere sampling:

Withnail and I (1986)

Dazed and Confused (1993)

Hocus Pocus (1993)

The Long Goodbye (1973)

Empire Records (1995)

Gosford Park (2001)

Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)

The Royal Tennenbaums (2001)

Before Sunrise (1995)

La Strada (1954)

The Virgin Suicides (1999)
